With the Virtual Grand Prix Series on an off-week, the Challenge series made its return.
Answering the call was Formula 1 sponsor Heineken, who sent four of their ambassadors into battle.
The Gfinity Arena once again played virtual host to the event that saw 2016 World Drivers’ Champion Nico Rosberg, David Coulthard, Robert Doornbos, and Brazilian football icon Roberto Carlos take on a series of challenges.
The Challenge Heineken put three events in front of the drivers.
The first was a one-on-one battle over just one lap around the Interlagos circuit. It was Rosberg and Coulthard who progressed to the final, that took place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. It was the Scot Coulthard that took a 2-0 victory over Rosberg thanks to some rather aggressive overtaking manoeuvres.
The second challenge saw all four drivers take on a five-lap race around the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, the same track where Rosberg secured his championship. It ended up being an easy win for Rosberg, who certainly has a good affiliation with the track.
The final challenge, around the fan-chosen Circuit of the Americas in Texas, saw Heineken’s four ambassadors take on a talented grid of racing content creators, including Maxime MXM, Jay Pietsmiet, and the eventual winner Benjamin Daly, aka Tiametmarduk.
It was a frenetic race with collisions and amazing overtakes up and down the grid. The final points tally saw Rosberg take a narrow 4-3 victory over Coulthard. McLaren’s Lando Norris still leads the way with 5 points.
The Challenge Heineken event was streamed live on the Formula 1 YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch channels.
This weekend sees the return of the Virtual Grand Prix as the paddock heads to Monaco to do battle around the most famous street circuit in the world.
A star-studded line-up of racers and celebrities will race around the difficult track at 6pm BST on Sunday 24 May.
